Final match of the 2006 Apertura

Racing vs. San Lorenzo

Yes, you read that correctly. The 2006 Apertura finally ended on Wednesday night, when Racing hosted San Lorenzo in a match initially scheduled to have been played in November. The week previous to the original date, Racing’s fans had rioted at the Avellaneda derby, causing it to be called off and this match to be ordered behind closed doors in a neutral venue (the Estadio Unico de La Plata). On the day of the game, though, fans of both clubs protested – peacefully but forcibly – causing it to be postponed indefinitely.

Last night it was finally played and, entirely predictably given their recent run of ‘form’ – if that’s the right word – Racing lost, 1-0, to a goal from the magnificently named Malingas Jiménez in the 80th minute.
