Well, it’s been coming. The superclásico may be the big story of the weekend, but of more interest in the long term may well be the future of Independiente, who became the first of the ‘Big Five’ this year to part company with their manager (Racing and arguably River were the other competitors for the distinction). Independiente lost as the home team in Racing’s stadium on Saturday night, 2-0 against Godoy Cruz. After their dreadful start to the season, and the pressure that had built up, there was no other way for it to go, and Jorge Burruchaga, who scored the winning goal in the 1986 World Cup final, has resigned from the hotseat at the Avellaneda club.
The other notable scores saw San Lorenzo regain – and then maintain – their outright leadership, thanks to a win over Gimnasia La Plata and today’s draw in the super. Newell’s kept up their good form, and Vélez emerged triumphant from a five-goal thriller in El Sur. Rosario Central’s win over Nueva Chicago leaves Racing second from bottom in the table. Oh, and there was not one red card this weekend. Bizarre but true.

Sadly it was time for Burruchaga to go. This has been his dream job (he’s a former Independiente great) and he’s been very successful elsewhere (he helped build up both Arsenal and Estudiantes into the teams they are today) and every Rojo was hoping he’d be able to repeat that with Independiente but it just hasn’t been what has happened. Hopefully one day he can return to Independiente’s bench. In the meantime, a new face and new ideas are what the team needs to get out of it’s doldrums as Burruchaga’s methods just were not working.
Can I just ask, is that Kily Gonzalez at Rosario Central who used to play for Valencia?
Andrew – yes it is.
