…Three left. Libertad, the Paraguayan champions who knocked out River en route to the Copa Libertadores semis last year, have put paid to Banfield’s hopes of claiming the trophy with a 1-0 win when they visited El Sur on Wednesday night. Josemir Lujambio missed a penalty in the first half for the hosts, Vladimir Marín made sure it mattered eight minutes into the second half. Banfield finish Group 1 in third place, having won three and lost three, scoring eight and conceding eight. So they’ve shown remarkable symmetry, if nothing else.
Boca and Vélez are the two left in, which is made up to three because mathematically, Gimnasia can still qualify from Group 8, they just need to uttery demolish Defensor Sporting of Uruguay on Thursday night in their last match to do so. Vélez also host Emelec on Thursday night, whilst River (already eliminated) and Boca end their group campaigns next week.
A short write-up of the Argentina vs. Chile friendly in Mendoza will be up on Thursday evening, UK time. I’m afraid it’s too late over here even for me to stay up for it, but at half-time it was goalless. Rest assured the goals will be available here as well.
