Gimnasia out of the Copa… just.

Hearty apologies go out to all fans of Gimnasia La Plata who visited today hoping to see how their side did last night. As mentioned in the Vélez post, Gimnasia’s match simply took place too late at night for me to update, and I can’t get online from work to do so any earlier than right now.

In any case, you’d have got bad news, because El Lobo, who needed to put four without reply past Montevideo side Defensor Sporting, only managed 3. They did so with virtually a reserve side, though, since their main players were saved for the La Plata derby this weekend (presumably on the assumption that they weren’t going to get near the required total last night anyway… Whoops!). First-teamers did provide the goals, Sergio Leal scoring right before half-time, a strike which was sandwiched by two from Luciano Leguizamón. His second and Gimnasia’s third came with a full 17 minutes left, but in that last, desperate period, they just couldn’t find the extra to give them what would have been one of the more improbable qualifications in Libertadores history. Gimnasia are out, joining River and Banfield among the fallen. Vélez and – with the right result next week – Boca remain.

A slightly bizarrely compiled video of the goals from the match follows. Thanks to some Brazilian chap on DailyMotion for it.
