Marching on

Jumping into the next round

Vélez made hard work of it against Ecuador’s Emelec, but they got what they needed in Liniers, and are through to the knockout stage of the Copa Libertadores. The visitors made them work, and El Fortín didn’t help themselves, but Damián Escudero’s 64th-minute goal settled nerves and saw them through 1-0.

In the other Group 4 match, Internacional beat Nacional 1-0 in Porto Alegre, but the Uruguayans’ superior goal difference means Inter have become the first defending champions in Libertadores history to fall at the group stage. Vélez qualify as group winners on 11 points, having won 3, drawn 2, lost 1, scored 6 and conceded 3. Nacional are second, winning 3, drawing 1 and losing 2.
