Playing to form, and aganst it

There was one surprising occurence on Saturday, and one not-very-surprising-at-all. For the third time in the last month, Quilmes have had a match called off. Their match away to Lanús started on a waterlogged pitch and lasted just nine minutes before referee Saul Laverni called it off due to floodlight failure. Following suspensions of two home matches in the last three weeks, Quilmes have played one match in the last month.

But there was more to cheer about just a little way north in Avellaneda, where Independiente managed something incredible. Having conceded more than any other side in this championship, they gave a debut to youth team goalkeeper Fabian Assman against Nueva Chicago – and promptly kept their first clean sheet of the campaign. With former goalkeeping great Miguel Santoro watching from the bench in his first match in charge, is this a bright new dawn? Probably not, but never can a 0-0 at home have been celebrated quite so fervently by a once great club…
