Victory to the ‘visitors’

Pavone celebrates another

The La Plata derby is effectively played on neutral ground these days, what with both clubs sharing the Estadio Unico de La Plata, and today it was Gimnasia’s turn to be at home, so Estudiantes played the part of the away side. Gimnasia’s first ambition can have been little more than avoiding the 7-0 tonking Estudiantes handed them in the Apertura, on their way to the championship. Well, they did that.

Estudiantes played with ten men for practically the whole match after striker José Calderón got himself sent off in the third minute – yes, of the first half – for a hideous challenge on Gimnasia defender Lucas Landa. In the 38th minute, it got even better for Gimnasia as they took the lead through a header from none other than Landa himself. And then… oh, dear. Mariano Pavone equalised for the champions just two minutes later from a dubious-looking penalty, and bagged the winner in the 63rd minute. Not quite 7-0. But still a derby win…
