A news roundup

Seasoned visitors to this site will have noted that the updates over the weekend weren’t quite as extensive as usual. This was due to me taking a couple of days off. I do apologise. The biggest story while I was away was that Reinaldo Merlo has finally parted company with Racing. It’s been coming for a while and on Saturday, he resigned by telephone, leaving a stinging attack on the club’s directors, accusing club president Fernando De Tomasso of refusing to speak to him when an audience was requested last Wednesday, and the directors in general of not following through with some of Merlo’s plans for the future. Miguel Micó has been named as caretaker boss for three games, with some interesting ideas as to who will have the role more permanently. There will be more on this in my Voice Of Football column tomorrow.

In other news, Diego Maradona has, since we last heard of him on Hasta Lo Gol Siempre, been moved into intensive care, come out of intensive care, been checked out of hospital altogether, and sent to see a psychiatrist. He’s got some problems, we’re told. Well, I never.
