Boca 3 – 0 Vélez

Ain’t that a kick in the head…

On Wednesday night, in the first leg of the all-Argentine Copa Libertadores second round tie between Boca Juniors and Vélez Sarsfield at La Bombonera, Boca ran out 3-0 winners thanks to goals from Juan Román Riquelme, Martín Palermo and Clemente Rodríguez. Of more importance, though, was an absolutely horrific foul on Rodrigo Palacio by Vélez goalkeeper Gastón Sessa, which left the Boca striker looking distinctly not alright and Sessa sent from the field of play. Amazingly, despite looking like he does in the picture above, Palacio played on until well into the second half.

As Vélez manager Ricardo La Volpe put it after the match ‘Sessa is a human being, and human beings make mistakes.’ True, but in this case it’s a mistake that quite rightly leaves the player’s future at the club in grave doubt. The second leg, at Vélez’s stadium, is played next Wednesday. Read on for videos of the goals (and the foul).
