Vélez 3 - 1 Boca

One Argentine side is left standing in the Copa Libertadores quarter-final, and that side will be Boca Juniors, who clung on in Liniers to triumph 4-3 on aggregate over Vélez Sarsfield, thanks to last week’s 3-0 win in La Bombonera, and a brilliant performance from Boca ‘keeper Mauricio Caranta (not every day you say that about a goalie who concedes three times).

Juan Román Riquelme scored an equaliser direct from a corner, in a match which Boca played with ten men for most of after Pablo Ledesma’s 34th minute sending off. Read on for the goals. For Vélez, Mauro Zárate got two, and Ramón Ocampo the third. In a frantic finish Vélez would have needed to score twice late on to go through, but Caranta kept them at bay somehow. As well as Ledesma’s red for Boca, Lucas Castromán and Mario Méndez were sent off for the hosts near the end.

On the 16th of May, Boca will play the first leg of their quarter-final at home to either Libertad of Paraguay or Paraná of Brazil. That tie is decided on Thursday night and currently stands at 2-1 to Libertad, who were away in the first leg.
