They’ve been neglected in these quarters, I have to admit, but worry not, here’s their day in the sun – two ex-pats were crowned champions of Portugal today, as Porto demolished Aves 4-1 at home to take the title on the last day.
Lisandro López (formerly of Racing) and Lucio ‘Lucho’ González (River and last year’s World Cup squad) have arguably Porto’s most important players this season, and Lucho – who’s scored 10 goals from midfield – has been talked about as the best player in the league.
Elsewhere in Europe, Lionel Messi inspired Barcelona to a terrifying 6-0 away pasting of bogey team Atlético Madrid, scoring twice, the first one – unsurprisingly – an absolute peach. In Italy, ‘The Inter Of The Argentines’, as they’re known in Argentina, drew 1-1 away to Atalanta to move on to 94 points with a game remaining – thus taking a Serie A points record to go with their shiny new scudetto. And in England Gabriel Heinze’s Manchester United lost out against Chelsea in the first FA Cup final at the brand spanking new (not to mention very, very late) Wembley stadium, going down 1-0 to a Didier Drogba goal near the end of extra time.
