Boca faced a very, very tricky task in Asunción on Thursday night. Having allowed Libertad a draw in La Bombonera last week, and an away goal into the bargain, they had to overcome one of South America’s toughest sides, in their own stadium.
It was touch and go for a while, but they did it in the end. After going in 0-0 at the break, Boca took encouragement from Libertad’s lack of imagination going forward. Juan Román Riquelme continued his recent revival by opening the scoring with a marvellous right-footed strike just after the hour, and Rodrigo Palacio added the second in the 71st minute. The goals will hopefully be online late on Friday night – but I’m away this weekend so if you don’t see them here, check our friends at GolesTV.
The semi-final begins on the 30th of May. Two Brazilian sides, Gremio of Porto Alegre (the club who gave Ronaldinho to the world) and Santos of, erm, Santos (who once had quite a handy player in their ranks as well, by all accounts) face off in the first semi, whilst Boca play Cúcuta of Colombia, a side who haven’t merely won their matches so far, but absolutely demolished many of their opponents, and scored some truly magnificent goals in the process. It should be a cracker…
