Under 20 World Cup quarter-finals

There’s a pretty big football match taking place in Maracaibo today, when Argentina take on Brazil in the final of the Copa América. But not to be forgotten are the Under 20 side, who take on Mexico in Ottawa around twenty minutes after the adults are scheduled to finish their own trophy quest. There are a couple of doubts for Hugo Tocalli’s side, one tactical, one fitness-wise.

Mexico won’t be afraid of coming at Argentina, and are probably the strongest side the albiceleste have faced so far, so Tocalli might reinforce the Argentine midfield with Matías Sánchez, allowing Ever Banega to free himself from the shackles of defending and concentrate solely on creating. Alternatively, Banega could be played as a more orthodox cinco, and Estudiantes’ Pablo Piatti brought in to help the attack.

The main reason nothing’s been said yet, however, is that Tocalli is waiting on the fitness of Vélez’s departing striker Mauro Zárate, who was kept out of the second round defeat of Poland by a knee injury. He’s important enough to Tocalli for the coach to be waiting until the last minute on his fitness, but if Zárate doesn’t pass a late late fitness test, there’ll be an able replacement in Ángel Di María, who scored the first goal in the Poland game.
