Back to football!

After the dominance over the previous days of Gonzalo Acro’s murder, it was back to football on Friday night. Primera A saw its second week kick off, whilst B Nacional and Primera D (the second and fifth divisions) both began with bangs.

In Primera A, on Friday night, Arsenal saw off Colón in style, easily outplaying them, taking two good chances to win 2-0, whilst defending champions San Lorenzo had to come from behind in San Juan against newly promoted San Martín, scoring through first an Alejandro Gómez own goal and then a Gastón Fernández strike with eleven minutes remaining to win 2-1.

On Saturday, Gimnasia La Plata looked like they’d thrown their chance to erase memories of last week’s defeat, twice going down to Central in Rosario. But right at the death, Pablo Batalla popped up to ram home an equaliser with two minutes remaining. 2-2, and neither side have yet won a game in this Apertura.

The B Nacional began with a win for Quilmes, who are aiming to go straight back up after relegation last season, and comfortably overcame CAI 2-0 at home. Berazategui, meanwhile, opened their Primera D campaign with a 5-0 away annihilation of Paraguayo to boost hopes that they’ll be one of the favourites for this season’s promotion race. Midland, Lugano and Central Ballastero all also won their matches. In Primera C, Barracas Central beat Dock Sud 2-0 to win their second match in a row at the start of the new season, and share the leadership with Cañuelas and Luján after two matches.

River’s match against Newell’s in Primera A, meanwhile, has been suspended without a set date to be played, after police decided it would simply be too risky to play it now, with no idea as to what might happen in reaction to the death of Gonzalo Acro. If my opinion counts for anything, I’d say (as a River fan) that the only way it could take place would be behind closed doors, albeit that it’s no fault of the club’s own. What the AFA and security authorities think, however, remains to be seen…
