Just when you thought…

…it was safe to read about Argentine footballers being transferred, you’re proved wrong. Juan Román Riquelme and his agent claimed a few days ago that they’d reached an agreement with Atlético Madrid, but that now appears to have been a load of rubbish because no-one’s yet signed the playmaker, the transfer window has closed, and Boca – who’ve got an extension from the AFA specifically for this purpose – are having their US$12million bid for him considered once again by Villarreal.

There was rather sadder, less tediously drawn out but no less surprising news at the other top flight set of ‘Juniors’, Argentinos, where manager Ricardo Caruso Lombardi resigned on Friday for personal and health reasons. Caruso had not, apparently, been feeling altogether himself since the (apparently not football-related) incident a few weeks ago when he was attacked at a service station by a couple of men and left with bruises.

Caruso’s place on the bench for today’s match with Colón will be taken by his assistant manager Roberto Antelo. Thereafter, the new manager of El Bicho will be Néstor Gorosito.
