More trouble

Following Sunday’s clásico between Racing and River, some of the visiting barra bravas attacked some coaches on which ordinary Racing fans were travelling, injuring four. The two sets of fans were travelling on the Perito Moreno motorway from the partidos of Merlo and Hurlingham, in the west of Gran Buenos Aires, to the match in Racing’s El Cilindro in Avellaneda.

After coming close together, the coaches stopped and fans fought hand-to-hand for almost five minutes. Three of the injured Racing fans weren’t seriously hurt, but the fourth, Juan Gigante, aged 22, had to be taken to hospital and undergo surgery – reports today suggest he’s recovering well. At the match itself, River barra Marcelo Fabián Martínez was arrested for attempting to enter the stadium in spite of having been listed as one of the fans to be denied admission. During the match there were a further 28 arrests, mostly for the police to investigate people’s criminal records, which led no further.
