For some observers, this had been coming for a while, ever since his team won promotion to Primera A and it became apparent that the Under 20 management job for the national side may soon become available. But for many, it’s caused something of a stir. Antonio ‘El Turco‘ Mohamed has stepped down as manager of Huracán, just two days afterseeing his side’s unbeaten start to the Clausura ended by Boca in La Bombonera.
Mohamed’s relationship with club president Carlos Babington had been frosty for a while, with the manager holding a list of grievances thought to be topped by the poor condition of the stadium and pitch, and a lack of hot water in the dressing rooms. ‘There were many rifts, and the time had come for one of us to leave,’ announced El Turco to the press.
‘I give my apologies to the people of Huracán. It’s not really a goodbye, because I will be back one day,’ he promised, refusing to be drawn into speculation surrounding the Under 20 selección job. For his part, Babington claimed he was ‘very surprised,’ and ‘pained,’ but claimed he had been unable to change Mohamed’s ‘narrow-minded’ view on any of the issues the two had disagreed over.
Not unsignificantly, the mass protest seen at Huracán’s stadium from around 7pm local time on Tuesday night was directed entirely at the president. Fans of El Globo still seem to think there’s a chance of talking Mohamed back to the club. He may have promised to return one day, but they’ll almost certainly have to wait until Babington’s gone first.
