After El Turco Mohamed’s resignation on Tuesday, Huracán president Carlos Babington needs a replacement who’ll please those angered fans. Jorge Burruchaga has already annonced that if he goes anywhere, it’ll be to a Mexican club. So Babington appears to be honing in on a great name from the club’s past - Osvaldo Ardiles.
Ossie, El Inglés to his countrymen, pulled on the famous white shirt from 1975 until 1977 (when of course he started pulling on another famous white shirt, that of ‘Tottingham’ Hotspur). His managerial career, probably best known to our Anglophone readers for the revolutionary 0-0-10 formation he deployed during his time in charge of Spurs, most recently took in Israeli side Beitar Jerusalem, who he left just under a year ago.
Ardiles now lives in London, but seems to be considering a move back to his homeland – there were brief mutterings of him taking over at Racing during the Clausura, before Gustavo Costas was eventually taken on. Numerous other names are being considered for the Huracán post - Roberto Sensini and Angel Cappa among them – but Ossie is the only one as yet to have been approached. Youth team manager Carlos Amadeo will take charge for the weekend match against Gimnasia.
Update: according to the TyCSports website, the deal was confirmed at 21:30 Argentine time on Thursday night. Ossie will leave England on Friday, arriving in Buenos Aires on Saturday morning, and be presented as the new manager of Huracán on Sunday. He’ll watch the Gimnasia match as a spectator, and will take charge for Tuesday’s game against Banfield.
