When I published my last post on Friday night, there was one match still being played, and it was looking very much like Rosario Central were about to finally manage their first win of the campaign. They were leading Banfield 2-0 in El Sur, thanks to strikes from Martín Arzuaga in the 17th minute and Tomas Costa in the 51st.
But this season things just aren’t going that well for Central, and they managed to turn even this into a losing situation. Amazingly, they still had a 2-0 lead in the 85th minute, but managed to bugger it all up in scarcely believable fashion. First Jairo Patiño pulled back what looked only a late consolation for the hosts, then four minutes into stoppage time Nicolás Pavlovich pulled them level, sparking frenzied celebrations. When those had finally died down, the visitors went and gave away a penalty. Banfield ‘keeper Cristian Lucchetti saw it saved, but promptly slammed in the rebound.
Home manager Juan Manuel Llop, a former player at Central’s rivals Newell’s, claimed afterwards that ‘I had confidence that we’d get the draw.’ He couldn’t have expected the winner as well.
