Championship form

San Lorenzo have never really been at the races in attempting to defend the championship they won so imperiously and surprisingly in the Clausura. And yet, quietly, without too many noticing, they’ve won their last three matches in a row, the most recent of which was a good 2-1 at home to Argentinos on Sunday. Osmar Ferreyra won the match with 15 minutes left after Néstor Ortigoza had cancelled out the opener from Néstor Silvera (by then sent off).

It’s probably gone unremarked because San Lorenzo preceded this good run with one of three straight defeats, and thus have looked pretty pathetic and unable to make too much noise about defending their crown. During the week, they play Boca in La Bombonera, in a match that might not do very much for their own cause even if they did win it. It could throw a spanner in Boca’s preparations for next Sunday’s superclásico, though, and with the latter just two points off the pace and still to play this weekend, the next week could have a major effect on the title’s eventual destination.

One place it won’t be ending up is the Monumental, but Radamel Falcao García, as Olé put it, might have a second calling in Hollywood if this football thing doesn’t work out for any reason. Following his last-minute heroics against Botafogo in midweek, he treated fans to an even more breathless finish to Sunday’s match at home to Central. As the clock ticked into 90 minutes, the score was 2-2. Three minutes into stoppage time, Ronald Raldes appeared to have won the match for the visitors. But after the celebrations from the visitors had died down and the match eventually restarted, Falcao scored another brilliant header, eight minutes into extra time, to retrieve a point for the hosts. The super is calling…

~What is the story with River? Why are they so shite? pardon the castellano. They have more money than anyone else, seem to get the best players. What is going on? Pasarella has to go.

    Eight minutes of injury time?

  3. Ursus – Argentine news reports are especially infuriating regarding things like this, because they never seem to find the amount of injury time awarded to be worth commenting on, even when (as happened during the Clausura) one match was held up by so much that the winning goal was scored in the 58th minute of the second half! I’m assuming that a lot of time was taken up by the celebrations for Central’s goal. But who knows.

The match was actually on television here, but I didn’t last until the end. My bad.

  5. Legally televised Argentine football. You lucky man. While we’re on the subject – if anyone knows of a bar in Seville where I’ll be able to watch the superclásico next weekend, do let me know…
