The case of Gonzalo Acro: an update

It’s now three-and-a-half months since the murder of Gonzalo Acro by rival members of River Plate’s barra brava in Villa Urquiza. On Friday, the judge presiding over the investigation into the murder allowed Ubaldo Matera, the man who was accompanying Acro at the time and who was also hit, to walk free due to ‘lack of evidence.’ William Schlenker and four other suspects, however, have been detained further.

William Schlenker, younger brother of Alan, the leader of Los Borrachos del Tablón, is to be detained for further questioning, as are Carlos Berón, Martín Lococo, Andrés Torres and Alejandro Etcheverry.

Matera was hit in the back by a bullet but not gravely injured, and had been held as a suspect until now because when first questioned, his version of events seemed to be covering up some vital details - perhaps for fear of reprisals, because as soon as the police named him as a suspect he became more helpful.

As well as Matera, other suspects were also allowed to go free. They included Alan Schlenker himself, who has protested his innocence all along and who commentators on the case suspect may have ordered the attack in order to get rid of Acro, an increasingly powerful helper to Adrián Rousseau, who’s been involved for some time now in a dispute with Schlenker the Elder as to the leadership of Los Borrachos. It’s worth noting the reason – lack of evidence.
