It’s been a mixed twelve months for Gastón Fernández. First he returned from Mexico to River Plate, where he won the Torneo de Verano in January and was expected to be key to River’s title challenge in the Clausura. Then, for reasons best known to themselves, River’s board authorised his sale to San Lorenzo – where he promptly played a key role in their successful title bid, and was named player of the tournament. After injury spoiled his form in the Apertura, he could now be leaving Argentina for Mexico once again.
Fernández, who during his spell at Monterrey scored 8 goals in 1,500-odd minutes on the pitch, and played well, is now wanted by Tigres, who are preparing a reported US$2.2 million bid, and seem well advanced in contract talks with La Gata‘s representatives. Rafael Savino, the president of San Lorenzo, has insisted his side haven’t had any offers, and will be putting any which they might receive to manager Ramón Díaz for approval before letting go of key players.
One sticking point with Tigres’ offer might be that San Lorenzo only own just under 38% of Fernández’s registration, with the remainder owned by a separate enterprise. This would give San Lorenzo around US$800,000 of the fee – a US$300,000 loss on the amount they paid River for his services less than a year ago.
