It should have been a great day, both for Diego Maradona and for the city of Naples. The city’s favourite adopted son had been set to open a museum about his career, which had already toured through Argentina, Germany and Italy, but disaster struck at the last minute as it was revealed that thieves had taken no fewer than 600 items from his collection.
Among the stolen articles was a belt given to Diego by Pelé, a gift from Cuban president Fidel Castro, and the Golden Ball awarded to him as the best player of 1986 World Cup. Maradona has made a statement to the Argentine courts regarding the theft, and has accused the exhibition’s proprietor and tour organiser, Ernesto Texo, of being behind the crime.
