Closer to completion

One of the groups for the 2008 Copa Libertadores is now complete, with América de México defeating Cruz Azul on penalties in the final of their country’s Interliga, the Mexican qualifying tournament for the Copa. With this victory, América will go into Group 5, where they’ll be taking on Diego Simeone’s River Plate, as well as San Martín of Peru and Chilean qualifiers Universidad Católica.

Miguel Brindisi’s Atlas also sealed their place in the 2008 tournament, defeating San Luis 3-0 (Bruno Marioni among the goalscorers) to go into the qualifying round, where they’ll play Bolivian side La Paz. The winners of that tie will go into Group 3, alongside Colo-Colo of Chile, Maracaibo of Venezuela, and our very own defending champions, Boca Juniors.
