Atlas 3 – 1 Boca Juniors: the goals

Tuesday night saw Boca Juniors’ hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Copa Libertadores suffer a blow when they lost 3-1 in Mexico to Atlas. Having beaten them 3-0 in La Bombonera a few weeks ago, Boca were confident of all but sealing their place in the next round before this match, but came unstuck after Julio César Cáceres scored an own goal on 20 minutes. Within ten, they were back level through Sebastián Battaglia, but after Martín Palermo blew an unmissable effort, Bruno Marioni struck twice for Atlas.

If Colo Colo beat Maracaibo on Thursday night, they’ll leapfrog Boca into second place in Group 3, and a draw between them and Atlas on the last day of the group would subsequently be enough to put Boca out. It may just be out of the holders’ hands…
