Ramón Díaz will leave his post at San Lorenzo when the Torneo Clausura ends, it was confirmed on Wednesday. The dispute between manager, squad and directors was too much for the club’s heirarchy to work round, and Díaz, who won last year’s Torneo Clausura in his first campaign with the club, will leave in June. River Plate boss Diego Simeone has distanced himself from the job, whilst the board appear to be interested in former Vélez Sársfield and Boca Juniors boss Miguel Angel Russo. If Simeone is sacked because River don’t win the title, I would expect a job swap with Diaz. I’m not really sure why Diaz left River in the first place, he was the most successful coach they have had since I’ve been following Argentine football. And Oxford United? What was that all about?
Matthew, he had a major bust-up with the directors at River too. He’ll return to River one day, but not while Aguilar is club president…
Well, I suppose that’s a bit ridiculous if you are a River fan. Niall Quinn buried his differences with Roy Keane because he thought he was the best man for the job at Sunderland, yet a personality clash like this stops Diaz returning.
Mind you, Merlo’s had virtually the same at every club he’s been at. Presidents won’t leave these coaches alone to coach.
But have in mind that Aguilar was ready to do that and Diaz was seconds ago from signing for River and ended up choosing to stay at San Lorenzo.
In the end, the guy with the last word in all of these deals is American and has his face painted in green, if you know what I mean.
A wild card in the mix…Jose Pekerman just quit Toluca.
