Olympic preview number one

The Olympic Football Tournament kicks off on Thursday (yes, that is before the official start of the Games, which is on Friday), and Argentina, as the defending gold medalists from four years ago in Athens, will be red-hot favourites to retain the title, thanks in large part to an attacking lineup that would terrify most defences at full international level. If you’ve forgotten the squad, you’ll find it here (Nicolás Burdisso is injured and has been replaced by Nicolás Pareja). If, on the other hand, you want to read about them in a little more detail… well, I can help there too. Ahmed Bilal over at Soccerlens has just published an article by me analysing the key members of the Argentine squad.

‘At one end of the pitch at least, they are a full national team, or near as dammit. Four years ago Carlos Tevez led Argentina’s side to the country’s first-ever Olympic Gold medal – in any sport (they won the polo back in the ’50s, but it was only a test event). For Beijing, Tevez won’t be there, but the players who will be suggest there’s every chance of the champions defending their title.’
