River Plate have joined the two Juniors, Boca and Argentinos, in the quarter-finals of the 2008 Copa Sudamericana with a 2-1 win over Uruguayans Defensor Sporting in the Monumental on Thursday night to complete a 4-2 aggregate victory. Full back Paulo Ferrari, playing wide on the right of midfield, opened the scoring in the 7th minute after pouncing on a defensive slip-up in the visitors’ box and hammering the ball into the top corner. River dominated open play but defended as sloppily as ever at set pieces. All the same they doubled the lead through substitute Diego Barrado in the 77th minute after Sebastián Abreu had headed back across the goal for him after a Ferrari cross. Defensor got a consolation in stoppage time through Maxi Pérez. In the quarters, River will play Chivas de Guadalajara.
