Copa Sudamericana 2008: Argentinos and Estudiantes through

Argentinos Juniors and Estudiantes de La Plata both completed aggregate victories over Brazilian opponents on Wednesday night to win though to the semi-finals of the 2008 Copa Sudamericana. They’ll play each other in one semi-final. The other might be a double-headed superclásico, depending on Thursday’s results, but more likely it’ll be an all-Brazilian semi.

Estudiantes travelled to Rio de Janeiro having won 2-0 in the first leg in La Plata, and took care of the tie in the first half, with Marcos Angeleri – rumoured to be Diego Maradona’s pick for the national side’s right-back berth – and Juan Manuel Salgueiro scoring in the first half to make it 4-0 on aggregate. In just six minutes the hosts hit back through first Lucio Flavio and then André Luis, but it wasn’t enough. Leonardo Astrada’s side go through 4-2.

Argentinos, meanwhile, welcomed Palmeiras to La Paternal having already beaten them 1-0 away in the first leg, and ran out comfortable 2-0 winners to seal a 3-0 aggregate victory. Andrés Scotti and Nicolás Pavlovich scored the goals. Argentinos will host the first leg of the semi-final, on Thursday of next week.

Check back later for the goals.
