The penultimate weekend of the Torneo Apertura 2008 might see the title race decided, but it’s unlikely. Lanús get things going away to Vélez; win and they’ll crank up the pressure on the sides above them. The other contenders all play on Sunday. If Boca win away to Gimnasia La Plata, and Tigre (away to Central) and San Lorenzo (hosting Independiente in this weekend’s clásico) both fail to take three points, the Xeneize will be champions. Any other combination of outcomes will see the race go to the final weekend.

For me, Santiago Hoyos was one of the ‘figuras’ of Lanus’ win, he is an excellent defender who makes many important tackles, his odd mistake is usually more than cancelled out by all the good work he does.
So pretty bad that he’s banned himself from the final game, by timewasting at 2-0 up with seconds to go! Inexplicable, there was no way Velez were gonna get back into the game at that stage.
Still, Lanus should have too much for San Martin. I hope they win, as much for helping Racing and GELP in the relegation stakes as for the fact that, notwithstanding all the love for Tigre in these pages, I’d rather like Lanus to win the title again, cause I do enjoy their easy on the eye style. They weren’t great tonight, but they have been recently, and deserve a reward. Especially as the side will probably break up in January : (
