San Lorenzo, in danger of slipping into a bit of a slump after back-to-back defeats in the Copa Libertadores and the league prior to this weekend, got back to winning ways and staved off the vultures circling over Miguel Angel Russo’s managerial job with a 3-1 dismissal of Banfield on Saturday. A little earlier in Tucumán, San Martín grabbed victory by a single goal over Estudiantes, to lift themselves out of the relegation places.
In Boedo, San Lorenzo got off to a very early start against Banfield with Gastón Aguirre putting them 1-0 up in the fifth minute, seizing on a mistake in Banfield’s penalty area to stab the ball home. Just after the half hour Gonzalo Bergessio struck to double the advantage left-footed across the goal. After the break, man of the match Alejandro Gómez made it 3-0 in the 53rd minute from outside the box, before Uruguayan Santiago Silva headed in a consolation for Banfield late on.
In Tucumán San Martín deservedly beat Estudiantes with a header from Matías Villavicencio six minutes into the second half, to lift themselves out of not only the direct relegation places but also the promoción (playoff) positions. They could even have won more comfortably, but wasted a number of chances and had to hold out late on for the three points.
In the day’s other two matches, Lanús won 2-1 at home to Colón to ensure that they’ll be top of the league at the end of the weekend – Diego Valeri and Cristian Menéndez scoring for the hosts before Germán Rivarola hit back ultimately fruitlessly for Colón – and Tigre left it late to beat Gimnasia La Plata in El Bosque, key man Martín Morel popping up with the vital goal with four minutes remaining.

Why have Rusculleda and Morel been making more appearances on the bench than in Tigre’s starting line-up recently?
They’ll soon be getting fed up of this, they’re the best players Tigre have. If they were at Racing they’d start every week. Instead, I read that Castroman is starting tonight : (
Sorry Matthew, but I laughed out loud at your comment about Castroman and the frowny face. Whew ! Castroman and Migliore. Maybe the worse two bums at Boca in the past two years. Castroman went from a decent player at Velez a few years back to a virtual nothing. Are we certain he’s not from Brazil ?!
PHEW! I can’t say any more just now, I’ve work in the morning, but what a relief. Maybe luck is beginning to change… when Migliore dived on the ball in the last second, I was convinced it was going to squirm under him and go in. But we got the win, but playing nearly an hour at home to ten men really is a gift horse, and we can’t party like it’s 2001, there’s plenty more sufrimiento to come.
Good night!
We were shite (if you allow me to say that). We gave Godoy Cruz the ball. The territory. Control of the game. Everything.
We were playing like a small pub team, like if the draw was enough for us to achieve something.
Then they got a man sent off and we continued to play the same. We were absolutely horrible and then we found a goal (a great goal) and we suffered throughout the rest of the game (15 minutes made almost 20 because of the stupid time-waster that is Migliore -the player I hate the most in my entire ‘career’ as a football fan. There’s no other player I hate or have hated as much as I hate him-).
If it was my partner, my wife, my friend or something, I wouldn’t be on speaking terms with Racing right now. I’m incredibly pissed at everyone at the club (except perhaps for Lugüercio), even the fans. I’m still not happy, as you can see, because I’m witnessing the destruction of my beloved football club and this tree that is this win, is not hiding me the forest of desperation and suffering that is behind it.
I’m a little relieved with the result. Nothing else.
