Torneo Apertura 2009: Round 8 scores, scorers and goals

The eighth round of the 2009 Torneo Apertura finally ended on Monday night with the first match of Leonardo Astrada’s second spell in charge of River Plate. There wasn’t even the shortest of honeymoon periods, though – Independiente took a 3-0 lead by half time and only a Marcelo Gallardo penalty with a minute to go gave the hosts a consolation. It was Independiente’s first win in El Monumental in 13 years, and Américo Gallego’s first victory over River as a manager. All the other scores are right here as well…

This is the worst River team of my adult life. Hardly any of the current players deserve to wear the shirt. To think that not so long ago, players like Aimar, Sorin, Mascherano, Lucho, Saviola, D’Alessandro, etc wore the same shirt. What in the name of Zeus has happened?

River must be completely broke. Have they signed a player who provided any help whatsoever since Falcao ? As angry as their fans were yesterday, and with the squad they have now, it is likely to get much uglier at River before it gets prettier.
