Argentina 2 – 0 Greece: my reaction

Argentina’s passage to the second round of the 2010 World Cup having been confirmed on Tuesday, the country’s main concern during Wednesday’s matches was who their rivals in the quarter-finals will be should they see off Mexico on Sunday. There was also time, though, for some reflection on the better-even-than-hoped-for group performance, and in particular on the patient and comfortable 2-0 win over Greece yesterday. Great to hear that Messi’s popularity is rising in his homeland. He’s been superb. Beautiful to see him wear the captain’s armband too. Almost brought a tear to my eye!

I couldn’t agree more. Messi’s acceptance by the hardscrabble futbol fans of Argentina is a wonderful thing to behold. And, Happy Birthday to Messi !

On a side note, I discovered yesterday that yours truly and the exceptionally talented Martin Palermo share a birthday on November 7. Heppa !
