Newell’s Old Boys 2-0 Atlético Mineiro; Newell’s take a huge step forward in Libertadores semis

Wednesday night saw the first leg of the Copa Libertadores semi-final betweeen Newell’s Old Boys and Atlético Mineiro. Newell’s had lost their last three competitive games (one in the Copa Argentina, one in the Torneo Final and one in the Superfinal, which was of dubious value), whereas Atlético hadn’t played any matches for 2 1/2 weeks owing to the break in Brazilian action due to the Confederations Cup. Newell’s, though, ran out 2-0 winners – a more than deserved margin – thanks to second half strikes from Maxi Rodríguez and Nacho Scocco. You can see them right here.

The second leg will be played on Wednesday next week in Belo Horizonte.
