The 4-0 defeat away to Argentinos Juniors apparently helped to make up the minds of Newell’s directors and convince them that a manager would be really quite a useful thing for their football club to have. And to that end, they announced on Monday that Ricardo Caruso Lombardi, who only left Argentinos a couple of weeks ago, will be new Leproso coach. Caruso Lombardi has signed a one year contract and will bring a few of his coaching staff from Argentinos with him.
What his relationship with the fans who pushed Pablo Marini out will be like – Lombardi left Argentinos a few weeks after being attacked at a petrol station, and there were some who wondered whether it was really an entirely un-football related incident – remains to be seen. But he’s got a difficult situation to get Newell’s out of – second bottom in the Promedio table, and thus in very real danger of relegation if they don’t start picking up points soon. Still, a nice easy start to his reign. Newell’s host Boca on Sunday.
