One fixture looms over all, of course, as River host Boca in the biggest fixture anywhere in the world this weekend, hoping to give the visitors the full force of their frankly terrifying home form, and banish memories of their frankly terrible away form. In the last three years, River have been trophyless (unless one counts this year’s Summer Tournament, which we won’t) whilst Boca have claimed two Copas Sudamericana, one Libertadores, two Recopas and two league titles.
In the mini-championship which is the superclásico, however, River are unbeaten in the last five official meetings. In last season’s Apertura, Fernando Belluschi and Gonzalo Higuaín inspired Los Millonarios to a 3-0 walkover which turned into the beginning of the end for Boca’s quest to win a third straight league title. In La Bombonera in the Clausura, a thrilling 1-1 draw again pegged Boca back by just enough to stop them winning the title come the end of the campaign. With the Xeneizes currently neck-and-neck with Independiente at the top, will history repeat itself?
Boca do have one edge: 65 wins to 60 over the 179 matches played between the two sides to date. But will they open the gap, or will it close a little in the 180th clash?
No doubt you’ll all be incredibly disappointed to hear that a lack of being at home in front of my own computer at the moment will prevent me from being able to repeat the live updates of the last super this time round, but rest assured you’ll get all the reaction and as many highlights as I can throw at you come Monday (or thereabouts).
All kickoff times are local. Add four hours for British Summer Time, subtract one for Eastern Standard Time. So, for the Brits the super starts at 6pm, for those on the Eastern Seaboard it’s at 1pm, and for our Aussie readers, it’ll be 4am on Monday in Sydney (I think).
