Following Tigre’s and Lanús’s wins on Friday night, it’s getting tighter than a nun’s proverbials at the top of the table, with both Boca and Independiente dropping points and River winning – wait for it – away from home – to be able to keep dreaming. Three points separate the top four. Just six separate Lanús at the top from defending champions San Lorenzo in 8th. And there are fifteen to play for. Because I’ve got to jump on a train soon, I don’t have time to post the goal videos just yet, so check back later on today for those. But step this way for the results…
Primera División Torneo Apertura 2007, fourteenth round:

Olimpo de Bahía Blanca (S. González 19) 1 – 1 Banfield (C. Lucchetti 40)

Argentinos Juniors (G. Peñalba 60) 1 – 0 Racing Club
Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata 0 – 2 River Plate (D. Buonanotte 26; R. Falcao García 81)
Huracán (F. Mendoza 40; R. Schiavi OG 50; A. Franzoia 71) 3 – 1 Newell’s Old Boys (R. Schiavi 37)
Boca Juniors (M. Palermo 71) 1 – 1 Estudiantes de La Plata (P. Piatti 1; P. Alvarez OFF 75)
Independiente (G. Denis 36; L. Mareque OFF 58) 1 – 2 San Lorenzo de Almagro (A. González 26; J. Ortíz 66; O. Ferreyra OFF 28)
So, After fourteen matches Lanús sit at the top of the table, with 27 points. Independiente and Tigre both have 25, Boca 24. Argentinos in fifth have 23, River and Banfield have 22 and San Lorenzo, in eighth, are on 21. With River hosting Independiente next week, it could start to get even more congested.
At the bottom, Central are still stuck on just one win, and 10 points. Olimpo have 13, San Martín and Gimnasia La Plata are both on 15. Sixteenth-placed Arsenal are on 16, and Newell’s, Colón and Estudiantes all have 17. With one-quarter of the campaign left, only Central cannot possibly win the championship. Everyone else – mathematically, at least – has a chance.
