Right on time

Lázzaro and Morel prance across the pitch

It was all looking thoroughly buggered-up. Ninety minutes were up in Victoria, and somehow Tigre had contrived to not win against, of all the sides in the league, Rosario Central. Rosario Central! The hosts had let a half-time lead slip as José Vizcarra gave Central an equaliser just before the hour, and the Apertura’s worst team had an away point in their hands. Tigre’s dreams of the title: finished. And then…

And then Tigre’s leading scorer Leandro Lázzaro popped up three minutes into stoppage time to turn it all on its head again and throw them right back into the thick of it. Tigre had been superb in the first half, taking the lead in the tenth minute through Martín Morel and leaving the visitors without a say before the break. In the second, they fell to pieces and allowed Central back into it, and a chance to lift themselves off the bottom of the table.

After Vizcarra’s equaliser, Central created more chances and saw them all go begging. And as so often happens, they were made to pay. In the final minute, a long ball forward was brought down and finished by Lázzaro, and the home crowd, not for the first time in this championship, went wild. With two matches now left, the promotees are still in the title race. Two points behind Lanús and one ahead of Boca – both of whom play on Monday. It couldn’t happen… could it?
