A three-day digest

It’s been an interesting few days whilst I’ve been away, and I hope I don’t miss anything out of a whirlwind summary: Saturday’s superclásico in Mendoza was a thriller, seeing five goals and four red cards as River avenged their 1-0 defeat of the Torneo de Verano with a 3-2 victory. On the same day, Andrés D’Alessandro completed his move to San Lorenzo – not, as seemed imminent, River.

Friday saw Independiente beat D’Alessandro’s new side 3-1 in the Copa Ciudad de Salta, and the revelation that Sergio Agüero is, as suspected by some in Spain for a short while, on more than just friendly terms with Diego Maradona’s daughter, Gianina. Sunday was quiet on the domestic front, but Agüero’s squeeze will be hoping he recovers after he picked up an injury to his right ankle during Atlético de Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Murcia, that will keep him out for ten days.

Also on Sunday, Sergio Batista’s Under-23-plus-Riquelme selección arrived in LA for Wednesday’s friendly against Guatemala, and started preparing on Monday. And on Friday and Saturday, Uruguayan club Cerro had a horrific mini-tour of Buenos Aires, first losing 5-0 to Huracán on Friday, before going down 2-1 to Banfield on Saturday. In other friendlies, Racing beat Gimnasia La Plata 2-0, Vélez won 2-1 against Defensores y Justicia, and Newell’s and Central both drew matches – 0-0 with Ben Hur and 1-1 with Unión de Santa Fé, respectively.

And that, hopefully, brings us more or less up-to-date. Bring on the final few days before the Clausura commences…
