Estudiantes began the weekend with a thrashing of Newell’s which saw them go top of the table, and they were joined on nine points the next day by Vélez, who beat Banfield. River and Boca both won on Sunday evening to keep in touch with the early leaders, whilst the champions got back to winning ways in style, and Central pulled off a shock against Independiente, which could prove vital in their battle for survival.
