Lower division roundup

Yes, it returns at last, a week or two later than promised, for which I apologise – here’s what’s been happening in the AFA-affiliated lower divisions!

Monday night saw Chacarita Juniors hold on to third place in the B Nacional, as they beat Atlético Rafaela 1-0 in La Paternal to end a run of five matches without a win since 2008 began. Víctor Figueroa scored the only goal of the game, and in the second half both sides had a man sent off – Franco Dolci for Chacarita and Ignacio Celaya for Rafaela.

Monday evening’s other result in the second tier saw a 2-2 draw between Independiente Rivadavia de Mendoza and Aldosivi – a result which keeps both sides in exactly the same positions they were before the weekend started, 16th and 15th respectively.

The weekend also saw a comfortable 3-0 win for Belgrano against Godoy Cruz, a tense draw in the clásico between Quilmes and Platense, and leaders San Martín de Tucumán being held 0-0 at home by Tiro Federal. San Martín still lead the way after 23 matches, though, with 42 points, whilst Quilmes have 39 and Chacarita are 2 further back, level with Belgrano de Córdoba. At the bottom, Defensa y Justicia (21) and Ben Hur (22) are in danger of being cut off, but it’s Ben Hur and Talleres de Córdoba who need to worry most about their Promedio. Nueva Chicago take on Ferro on Tuesday night.

All Boys continued to run away at the top of Primera B, winning 3-1 at home to Talleres (RE), and are on 57 points from 26 matches. Ten behind in second, Atlanta lost away to Flandria, 1-0, whilst Defensores de Cambeceres, who are propping the table up, managed a 2-2 draw against Tristán Suárez which saw both sides score in the last six minutes. 3rd to 6th is getting very congested, with Sportivo Italiano, Los Andes, Deportivo Morón and Sarmiento de Junín all separated by just five points.

Primera C leaders Colegiales beat second bottom Argentino de Rosario 3-0 away from home, racing into a two-goal lead in the opening five minutes and never looking back. Colegiales are on 50 points with El Porvenir, who won 2-1 at home to Sportivo Barracas Bolívar, in second on 46. Dock Sud, who’ve won just two matches in the first 25 rounds, are bottom on 11.

There were some high-scoring matches in Primera D, Leandro Aversa hitting a double which included a last-minute winner as Liniers beat Claypole 3-2. Berazategui got a 4-1 home win over Yupanqui, and Ituzaingó beat Central Ballester 4-0. League leaders Defensores Unidos de Zárate, though, took the mantle for biggest win of the weekend, demolishing second-bottom Puerto Nuevo 5-0 away. Defensores Unidos lead on 45 points, whilst Argentino de Quilmes have 44, Berazategui and Liniers 41 apiece, and Alfredo Di Stéfano’s former side Midland 38. Deportivo Muñiz are bottom, the only side not yet in double figures, with eight points. Both them and Puerto Nuevo have managed to concede 53 goals in just 22 matches so far.
