Clausura ’08: Round 5 fixtures

Torneo Clausura 2008 logo

No fewer than four clásicos this weekend, two between ‘Big Five’ clubs – Racing host San Lorenzo and Independiente visit Boca – one sort-of derby, an all-Santa Fé Province clash between Central and Colón, and a proper derby between two of the clubs from the zona Sur of Gran Buenos Aires, with Banfield visiting champions Lanús. Oh, and Diego Simeone visits his former club Estudiantes (who had some rather choice words to say about the manner in which he left them, remember) for the first time in charge of River. And Premiership watchers are told Sky Sports Super Sunday is intense!

Kick off times are local. Add two hours for Greenwich Mean Time. Clásicos are highlighted in red.

  1. It’s going to be an interesting weekend, indeed.

One quick note: Today (March 7) was declared the “Racing Club supporter’s day”. Why is this?

Because back when the club went bankrupt (1999) Racing were scheduled to play their opening league fixture at home on March 7 against Talleres. The club was forbidden to play and yet the stadium received more than 30000 supporters who were there just to show that Racing was not dead.

Today, 9 years later, we will face San Lorenzo in a match that will be crucial in our quest to avoid relegation. I doubt we’ll see 30000 people tonight and I doubt we’ll have many reasons to celebrate the supporter’s day.

Here’s a link about this subject:

One of the very hot fixtures is Rosario Central vs. Colón. Two desperate sides in a battle to escape from the red zone.

So this is going to be a very interesting Friday.
