Saturday’s matches saw two 3-1 wins, one for Independiente and then one for San Lorenzo, to keep both sides just a point apart in their battle to hang onto the coat-tails of the leading pack. Independiente got a comfortable away win against Olimpo, whilst San Lorenzo claimed their sixth win on the trot in the Nuevo Gasometro against Rosario Central, who as a result slip back into the relegation playoff spots.
Germán Denis struck twice for El Rojo in Bahía Blanca, either side of a Daniel Montenegro goal to send the visitors in 3-0 up at half time. With four minutes left, Josemir Lujambio pulled back a consolation for Olimpo, but it was too little too late, and the provincial Buenos Aires side continue at the bottom of the Promedio. If Racing can get a point against Arsenal on Sunday, Olimpo will also go bottom of the Torneo Clausura table.
Central aren’t doing an awful lot better in the relegation table, but visited Ramón Díaz’s side looking to continue a vastly improved campaign in the Clausura. As it proved, though, an early goal from Gonzalo Bergessio put them on the back foot straight away, and Bernardo Romeo got a second just 23 minutes in to effectively kill the match as a contest, in spite of Central’s 29th minute goal from Leonardo Borzani. Adrián González got one just before the hour to put it beyond doubt for the hosts, who are now sixth on 15 points with Sunday’s matches still to come. Central, though tenth in the Clausura, drop to 17th in the Promedio.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Colón beat Huracán 1-0 in a showdown between Antonio ‘Turco‘ Mohamed’s new team and his old one, and Banfield drew with Gimnasia in a match for which the 0-0 scoreline was more than fitting, by all accounts.
