The other matches on Sunday inevitably didn’t get the same attention as the main attraction, and it’s a shame I don’t have more time and space to cover them here because two in particular, frankly, were far better matches. In La Plata, Gimnasia took the lead but in the second half, San Lorenzo stormed back and came from behind, away from home, helped by Gimnasia ‘keeper Carlos Kletnicki’s second own goal in as many matches, to join River Plate and Estudiantes on 27 points at the top. And the relegation six-pointer between Central and Racing – previously dead level on points average in the Promedio had an agonising finish for fans of La Academia. Four goals in the final fifteen minutes saw hopes seesaw dramatically and just as Racing thought they’d got a point with a late one from Facundo Sava, Kily González popped up for the hosts even later to win it. It’s not looking good for the sky-blue half of Avellaneda…

Tigre (R. Martínez OFF 90+3) 0 – 2 Vélez Sársfield (D. Escudero 65; S. Silva 80)
Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata (F. Domínguez 30; J. H. San Esteban OFF 48) 1 – 2 San Lorenzo de Almagro (C. Kletnicki OG 61; B. Romeo 83; R. Díaz (manager) OFF 90+3)
These results leave River, Estudiantes and San Lorenzo all tied on 27 points at the top of the table. Boca are on behind, on 26, Vélez have 24 and Independiente 23. It really is rather tight up there. Central’s win over Racing pulls them clear of the Avellaneda side and the playoff zone, leaving Racing and Gimnasia de Jujuy as the sides currently occupying those spots. Olimpo’s win over San Martín has no effect on anyone (apart from the excruciating embarrassment any San Martín fans or players will be feeling over it).
As ever, check back here for the goals on Monday, which is also when the league tables page will be updated accordingly.
