Clausura ’08: Round 19 fixtures

Here it is, ladies and gents: the final weekend of the Primera A Torneo Clausura 2008. River are already champions, but there’s still the small matter of relegation to sort out, and to that end the weekend’s most important match is the winner-takes-all game in Santa Fé, where Colón host Racing. I’m in Nottingham on Saturday night to watch the British leg of the MotoGP on Sunday, so there won’t be any match write-up on Saturday evening, but I’ll be back by Sunday for the full breakdown of scores, and what they mean. If your side’s involved at the wrong end of the Promedio, then all the best…

All kick off times are local. Add four hours for British Summer Time.

  1. I’ve got a brother in Brighton (UK) who will also be very nervous about this game.

We need all the (virtual) support we can get! Actually, any kind of support will be needed!

I can’t think of many other things these days. It is a terribly long wait and I’ve played this game many times in my head already I don’t even want to think of it again until Sunday!

Whatever happens, this will go down as the longest short tournament in my history as a Racing supporter and I doubt it’ll be overtaken by another season in the future (or at least I hope for that!).

  2. Hey, Sam, I’ve noticed we’ve got a few regular posters who support Racing Club as well as a few who follow River, Boca and even a Newell’s fan.

Have you thought of running a HEGS Census?

Where are your readers coming from and which Argentine team do they support?

I think it could be a funny thing to do but I don’t know if it’ll imply a lot of work for you or not.

I’ve just thought of that idea. What do you think of that?

  3. Seba, I ran one last (British) summer and will be doing so again this year, although it’s primarily to get suggestions for improvements people feel could be made to the site, etc., because the number of respondents for all these things (the awards as well, for instance), whilst sizeable in its own right, is only a fairly small proportion of those who actually read the site.

We do have a fair few Racing and River fans, I’ve also had emails from Huracán and San Lorenzo fans, and the Flickr group contains among others fans of Godoy Cruz and Platense (or at least, people whose regular live fix is at those stadia). I’ve still not noticed any Independiente fans commenting or emailing me, though. You’ve obviously put them off!

  4. Maybe nobody notice them, because they are just readers like me, but there are some. At least 1 I can say!

Greetings from the “turkish/croatian-district” of Vienna, haha!

  5. Racing v Colón is getting there.

I had two dreams about this game this week. We got a draw (hence…went to the Promoción) in one of them and we lost in the other.

Yacob scored (in my dream, I insist) but we lost 2-1. Both dreams came on Friday night.

The other one saw a great goal by Avalos worth very little because Colón equalized in the dying seconds of the game.

Please…please…please Racing, prove all my dreams wrong today! It’s the last thing I ask this season! haha!

I’ll watch it in the same bar where I followed Racing 1-0 Huracán. It has a great name and if we get a result tonight, I think I’ll give the waiter a huge huge tip!

The bar is called VICTORIA URQUIZA (Urquiza is the name of the neighbourhood. Victoria is a woman’s name but also means VICTORY in Spanish).

Can’t think of anything else than that match. I’m scared!

  6. Speaking of Yacob, I read in Clarin this morning that he has a cousin (Walter) who is a defender for Union Santa Fe, who are basically playing the loser of the match in the promocion. I guess their whole family is rooting for Racing on this match.

  7. I shall be the only person I know ignoring Italy v Spain tonight! Racing are live on C+ Eventos, and my Canal + card is working intermittently… I saw everything of Brasil v Argentina except injury time, when my screen froze as the signal scrambled…
This had better not happen tonight! I shall be online looking for a stream if it does…
I’ll be thinking of Seba in his bar – hopefully a 100% Racing bar?! – as I watch, and will be nervous too. A Colón-Union promoción has a nice ring to it!
VAMOS AKD! Sabaleros a La B!

(And if Racing win, maybe a new amistad with Union will be forged, like the one between Racing and GELP?)

  8. So so sorry Seba, and all the Racing fans. I stil can’t believe Racing lost that game. Sava has gone to pieces completely, but Racing totally dominated that second half, even with then men. Colon offered nothing, and they will be down there struggling again next season.
As for Racing, well I need to find out all about Belgrano de Córdoba, I know nothing about their current side, are they a side Racing can beat? On tonight’s form, with a little more luck and some better finishing, I would hope so.
I’m going to Google them and find out…
