Colón lead the way

Early leaders Tigre and champions River have yet to play in the third weekend of the Apertura, but on Friday evening Colón lead the league table after a 1-0 win away to Rosario Central for their second win of the season. Having drawn with River on the opening weekend and thrashed Gimnasia de Jujuy away last week, Antonio Mohamed’s men now lead the standings with seven points. Of course, everyone else has yet to play this weekend. But that fight against relegation is looking good…

Although Central had started better, Ezequiel González once again to the fore in the playmaking department, their finishing was appalling and it was Pablo Aguilar, four minutes before the break, who made the breakthrough for Colón. Midfielder Diego Chitzoff lifted in a cross which defender Aguilar rose well to head in, leaving Central, who’d been looking for the opener all this time, to instead go after an equaliser.

In the second half, ‘Vitamina‘ Sánchez’s team continued to press in front of their fans, but Colón’s defence only seemed to strengthen with every new wave of Central attacks. When visiting forward Martín Cardetti was sacrificed for midfielder Sebastián Prediguer in the 58th minute, it was clear that Mohamed was trying to defend what his side had. And thereafter, Central just couldn’t find a way through, however hard they tried. It remained 1-0, and Colón are looking down on everyone else. Not a bad start for a side whose main preoccupation before the season was avoiding the drop…
