Brazil 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup: Argentina squad

The 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup kicks off on the 30th of this month in Brasilia, and Argentina, who play their first match the next day against China the following day, are among the favourites as ever. It’ll be a hard job to beat the hosts (who knocked Argentina out of the Copa América in the semi-finals earlier this year) on home soil, and champions Spain will be there or thereabouts as well, but the 14 players to travel to Brazil for the tournament have been confirmed.

Argentina squad for Brazil 2008 Futsal World Cup, managed by Fabián López:

Goalkeepers:
Javier Guisande (Boca Juniors)
Santiago Elías (Pinocho)
Defenders:
Diego Giustozzi (Caja Segovia)
Leandro Planas (Biseglie, Italy)
Sebastián Corazza (Napoli Vesevo, Italy)
Carlos Sánchez (Caja Segovia, Spain)
Midfielders:
Hernán Garcías (Montesilvano, Italy)
Marcelo Giménez Uberti (without a club at present)
Matías Lucuix (Caja Segovia)
Maximiliano Rescia (Pinocho)

Forwards:
Fernando Wilhelm (Marca Trevigiana, Italy)
Martín Amas (Ferro Carril Oeste)
Esteban González (Jorge Newberry)
Cristián Borruto (Independiente)

Argentina’s key men will be goalkeeper Elías, defenders Corazza and Sánchez, and playmaker / ‘pivot’ González. They qualified for Brazil by virtue of finishing third in the Copa América earlier this year, where they scored ten and conceded eight in their four matches – going out to Brazil in the semis, as noted above. As for the group, they’re up against China, Guatemala, Egypt and Ukraine, and are expected to qualify without too much trouble.
