Leonardo Madelón was unveiled on Wednesday as the new manager of Gimnasia La Plata, replacing Guillermo Sanguinetti who stood down a couple of weeks ago. Madelón is reported as being delighted to have taken over, although whether the ex Central manager is being serious is another matter; Gimnasia are currently joint bottom of the Promedio with their namesakes from Jujuy.
Meanwhile, in Brasilia the futsal selección opened their World Cup campaign with a 5-0 demolition of China in Group C. Marcelo Giménez scored a first half hat-trick, with Martín Amas and Sebastián Corazza adding strikes of their own in the second period. With Guatemala beating Egypt 1-0, Argentina top the group on goal difference after the first match.
This looks like a good appointment for GELP, he took a Central side that was so low on confidence and got them to escape relegation, he will be expecting to do the same here. He has much more experience than Sanguinetti, but will he have the patience of the fans? The fans would be more patient with someone of true Gimnasia heritage, so Madelón needs to make a strong start. Beating River would of course help.
He brought Olimpo up winning both championships in ‘B’ in 2007, so maybe it’s a long term appointment – if GELP go down he could say it was too much ground to make up, but he will have the know-how to get them straight back.
