When the Argentine domestic season ends after this weekend, Diego Maradona will concentrate players from several clubs at the AFA’s training facilities in Ezeiza, where there’ll be a friendly match and some time for the players El Diez considers the most important in the domestic game to get to know each other better. The names of those players are right here.
The players at the clubs going for the title, if they end up in a playoff, won’t be joining the party, but the others will be meeting at Ezeiza from 4pm on Tuesday, and will play a match against a junior team from Tristán Suárez, one of the clubs in the B Metropolitano (yes, really).
The ‘squad’ for the meeting looks like this:
Agustín Orión, Gonzalo Bergessio (both San Lorenzo); Franco Zuculini, Maxi Moralez (both Racing, at least for now); Mariano Andújar, Marcos Angeleri (Estudiantes); Jesús Dátolo, Juan Forlín (Boca); Matías Caruzzo, Néstor Ortigoza (Argentinos); Sebastián Blanco (Lanús); Cristian Villagra (River); Emiliano Papa (Vélez) and Daniel Montenegro (Independiente).
Juan Román Riquelme and Juan Sebastián Verón were also expected to be included but, presumably, are already being looked at by the manager as main squad players. Interestingly, as well as José Sand not getting a call, no players from Tigre have been summoned, despite Maradona proclaiming on Wednesday that they were his favourites for the title. No place even for Martín Morel?
I like the question about Jose Sand. He is so impressive and has been impressing for more than one season. On that note, is he too old for European clubs, Brazilian giants or Mexican clubs to be calling?
