Independiente’s Medel deal collapses; River close in on Fabbiani

Gary Medel isn’t coming to Buenos Aires after all, in spite of last week’s expectations. Universidad Católica, the player’s Chilean club, have rejected Independiente’s terms on the deal which had been announced last week to bring one of South America’s most exiciting young midfielders to the Primera A. Meanwhile, River are close to a deal with Newell’s to bring in Cristian Fabbiani, their number one summer target. If they can get one of their current players to bugger off.

Universidad Católica made a decision which apparently came at the last minute that they didn’t really want to sell Medel after all, and as such it looks like Independiente’s hopes of signing him are gone. There may be daylight at the end of the tunnel, because the player and his agent don’t seem completely happy about this. Independiente’s five-year contract offer to him had been around ten times what Medel is earning in Chile, according to his agent, and he’d seen the Argentine league as a great staging post before a move to Europe. For now, though, he’s not for sale, and that is that.

River president José María Aguilar met with his Newell’s counterpart Guillermo Lorente on Wednesday to discuss the situation of the Rosario club’s forward Cristian Fabbiani. The deal struck was this: River can have want-away Fabbiani, for a nominal fee, in return for which Paraguayan striker Santiago Salcedo, who River signed from Newell’s a year ago, will go back to El Coloso del Parque. The snag here is that Salcedo doesn’t want to go; ‘I want to stay with River… this would be backwards step,’ the striker told the press. So now, presumably, Aguilar’s going to be on the phone to his friends in the stands at the Monumental to see whether they can pay Salcedo a visit.*

*I would like to make it clear, should any of José María Aguilar’s lawyers be reading this and understand it, that I didn’t type that sentence. You just imagined it.

  1. Please let this happen. Salcedo has been close to useless in a River shirt. I’ve liked the looks of Fabbiani since he banged in a bunch for Lanus a couple of seasons ago, even though he pretty obviously needs to lose weight (actually I haven’t seen much of him recently, is this still the case?)
